Hello, doers of darkness -- As you're strategizing for Kaleidoscope sign-ups, here are some works originally published online or have been made available online for your further consideration, and check out our post highlighting sources from underrepresented regions as well.

We try to limit ourselves to mostly linking to legal sources or to works out of copyright or not licensed for English distributions, and most of the links have regional restrictions. Posts like How To Access BBC iPlayer And More Online Video Internationally For Free, How to access BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Fancast, Pandora, any other region-restricted sites, On The Internet, Nobody Knows You're Not In The USA and Using BBC iPlayer, Spotify or Hulu internationally offer advices on how to bypass regional restrictions. Our locked source-sharing resource post also provides links to ambigously legal places where you may be able access some of the works listed below if you are unable to access them due to regional restrictions (and some works not listed below, but nominated for Kaleidoscope).

Works With (Limited) Online Access )

Are there other nominated works that you know can be accessed online? We also welcome links in non-English language or your own posts promoting any of the nominated works, and of course feel free to flail about the awesomeness of any nominated sources in the comments.

Hello doers of darkness, thank you for your input regarding issues about dispute and fandom eligibility that we have posted at Dispute deadline reminder and feedback for our rarity policy and Kaleidoscope Disputes! We understand your concerns about not having enough fandoms to offer and request, your desires to include as many fandoms and participants as possible, and your wishes to increase the numbers of artworks, stories or vids in fandoms with low numbers of one or two fanwork types but not others, and we will revisit the issue when we plan for the next challenge, including gathering new fanwork data and modifying our rarity criteria based on the new data if necessary. However, because Kaleidoscope is a multimedia challenge, we believe it is important to consider rarity across all media and have decided to uphold the rarity criteria for all types of fanworks this year. We thank you for your understanding!

We have re-added Blue Beetle (Comics) as an eligible fandom with Jaime Reyes (2011) and Paco Tejas (2011) as the qualifying characters for Kaleidoscope under the consideration of a series reboot with Ig Guara at the artistic realm, and we have added Sengoku BASARA 3 as an eligible fandom under the consideration that it meets our rarity criteria and qualifies for our challenge while Sengoku BASARA as a top-level franchise do not. We continue to welcome your input on these matters.

Below is a list of fandoms, characters, and people that are considered ineligible for Kaleidoscope )

Our post on clarifications on tagging conventions and source eligibility provides some more insights on why some fandoms and characters have been considered as ineligible for Kaleidoscope. However, If you believe any of above fandoms and characters have been rejected in error, or if a fandom or character that you've nominated does not appear in the above ineligible list or the Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations list (and our Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations spreadsheet for reference), please let us know!

Happy belated Hari Merdeka & Independence Day (Trinidad and Tobago)!

Hello, doers of darkness! The dispute period closes tomorrow, August 31, and sign-ups will open soon after. If you think a nominated fandom or character is ineligible for Kaleidoscope, please open a dispute at Kaleidoscope Disputes, and refer to how to open a dispute for instructions.

So far, we've mainly received disputes concerning the rarity of nominated fandoms. To review, our criteria for rarity are:

  • less than 1,500 English-language stories on major multifandom archives;
  • less than 15,000 artworks, 100 podfics and 350 vids (in any languages) on major multifandom archives;
  • no dedicated fandom-specific challenge that has run annually for more than two years in a row;
  • and no dedicated fandom-specific archive or community that has more than 1,500 fanworks.

Several of our nominated fandoms would be disqualified based on the numbers for one type of fanwork, even though they would be considered rare for other fanwork types. Last year, the moderating team required that fandoms be rare for all types of fanworks mentioned in our rarity criteria. If we keep this rule, out of the nominations that were disputed or double-checked by the moderating team so far, the following fandoms would be ineligible for Kaleidoscope )

We designed our rarity criteria to take into account the trends in both production and consumption of fanworks in English-language fandom, and due to the multimedia nature of our challenge, we think that it is fair to look at such trends across all fanwork types where it is feasible to do so.

However, this year, we have raised the number of minimum fandom offers for sign-ups from three to five fandoms. Thus, we are willing to revisit our policy on rarity and consider keeping fandoms that would pass our rarity criteria for all but one fanwork type. E.g. if a fandom is rare for artworks, podfics and English-language stories, but not rare for vids, it would not be rejected.

We would like to ask the [community profile] dark_agenda community for their thoughts so that we can arrive at a decision before opening sign-ups.

Hello doers of darkness -- We've finished processing all nominations! Thank you again, everyone, for nominating!

With the exception of the following fandoms and characters )

which have been considered ineligible for Kaleidoscope because they don't appear to qualify for our challenge, all nominations have been initially approved. We have 177 fandoms & about 965 characters, and the list of fandoms and characters can be reviewed at our Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations tags set (and our Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations spreadsheet for reference).

Our post on source eligibility might provide some insights on why some fandoms and characters have been deemed as ineligible. However, If you believe any of above fandoms and characters have been rejected in error, or if a fandom or character that you've nominated does not appear in the above ineligible list or the Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations list, please let us know!

Furthermore, if you believe a fandom or character in the Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations list does not qualify for Kaleidoscope based on our criteria for eligibility, please open a dispute at Kaleidoscope Disputes. We depend on your help and fannish knowledge to finalize the nominations list. Below is a tutorial on how to open a dispute.

We also welcome corrections and help on verifying how names and titles are transcribed and transliterated from the original source language. In particular, we continue to ask for your help in finding and verifying the names in the original source language and/or their romanized version )

Hello doers of darkness -- Thank you for nominating and participating in Kaleidoscope nominations process! As we gear up to finalize the nominations list through our dispute process, there are a few clarifications that we would like to make regarding Kaleidoscope tagging conventions and source eligibility in hope of providing some clarity on our requests for help in determining a fandom, character or person's eligibility or for corrections and information on their names.

Doers of darkness, nominations for Kaleidoscope 2012 are now closed! So far we have approved 155 fandoms and 758 characters (not including the 25 fandoms and 136 characters we are still processing). We will be generating a list of nominated fandoms, characters, and people for your review shortly.

While our mod team has done its best to look up fandom and character names in their original languages, there are several cases where we would like to verify those names as we do not read/write the languages in question and information was not available. We'd like to draw on the multilingual expertise of this community to ask for help. Our goal is to include name in the original source language and a romanized version of the name when possible and we would appreciate your help!

Fandom and character names needing verification and information )

We also welcome clarifications and corrections on how the names and titles in the Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations list are transcribed and transliterated from the original source language via comments, email (darkadmn [at] gmail [dot] com) or PM.

Once we've finished processing nominations, our disputes period will begin on August 27 (countdown clock), so stay tuned! We'll once again need your help with clarifications and corrections on fandom and character eligibility in order to finalize the nominations list.

Thank you again to everyone who promoted our challenge! Happy International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition!

Doers of darkness, this is just a quick reminder that the deadline for Kaleidoscope 2012 nominations is August 23 at 9:00pm Pacific Time (U.S.A.)! You can find a handy countdown clock here. Our nominations form can be found at Tag Nominations for Kaleidoscope 2012 Form, and please refer to our Kaleidoscope nominations post for more information on how to nominate fandoms.

In addition, because Kaleidoscope is hosted on AO3, there might be time when the archive may be down and Kaleidoscope links on AO3 inaccessible. [twitter.com profile] AO3_Status will provide updates on any downtimes, and [community profile] otw_news and [livejournal.com profile] otw_news are also sources for information.

Finally, thank you to everyone who promoted our challenge or allow us to promote in their communities! Thank you, also, to everyone who help contribute information to our Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations spreadsheet! We are grateful for your support and enthusiasm.

Addendum @ 8/23/2012 6:30 PDT: Please remember that in order to be eligible for Kaleidoscope, source should be produced by chromatic creators in addition to featuring chromatic characters.

Doers of darkness, there is one day left for our official Kaleidoscope Promotions Week!

We encourage you to continue to promote your rare chromatic fandoms of choice! The deadline for Kaleidoscope nominations is August 23, 9:00 pm Pacific Time (U.S.A.). You can check out our convenient countdown clock here. As always, feel free to post links here at [community profile] dark_agenda.

So far we have over 70 fandom and 300 character nominations! We've discovered that after 30 fandom nominations, the AO3 tag set interface only allows us to view 30 randomized fandoms at a time, so we plan to go ahead and begin approving/rejecting nominations soon. However, once a nomination has been approved or rejected, the nominator will not be able to edit it further. We will begin the process of approving nominations on 17 August 2012, which will give those of you who have submitted nominations already a chance to go back and edit if you so desire. Our tutorial for How to Nominate for Kaleidoscope & Other Information about the Nominations Process has information on how to edit nominations.

Since nominations need to be approved before they are visible on the tag set, and it is taking us time to review for typographical, romanization and language consistency, you can see the list of what has been nominated already at our 2012 Nominations spreadsheet. Except for the "Nominated Name" and "Kaleidoscope Wrangled Name" columns, which are protected, any can contribute and edit the spreadsheet.

However, please let us know if you have any typographical, romanization or language corrections to either the approved tags appearing in our tag set, Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations, or the "Kaleidoscope Wrangled Name" column in our spreadsheet, or suggestions on how to wrangle names under "Nominated Name" column for fandoms and characters.

We'd like to remind everyone that in order to be eligible for Kaleidoscope, fandoms should be produced by chromatic creators in addition to featuring chromatic characters.

If you're still deciding on what to nominate or if you would like to strategize with other [community profile] dark_agenda members to maximize your five fandom slots, please use the comments below to let everyone know what you want to nominate.

Happy Fête Nationale (Congo) and स्वतन्त्रता दिवस (Independence Day of India)!

Hello and welcome to [community profile] dark_agenda's Kaleidoscope, a multimedia fanwork exchange for rare chromatic source fandoms, in its second year of running.

For this current challenge, we are defining chromatic sources to be sources with chromatic characters or people and by chromatic creators. We use the term "chromatic" as an umbrella definition for "person of color", "non-white", "multiracial", "indigenous", "sourcelander", "hyphenate", "diasporian", etc.; while we acknowledge that it has shortcomings. Similarly, we accept that there is a certain flattening in our "white/Western/other" terminology.

Kaleidoscope is open to all sources with chromatic characters or people and by chromatic creators, from animations to books & literature to folklore & mythology to movies to music to real people to sequential art to sports to theater to TV shows to video games and including anime/manga/manhua/manhwa, Bollywood, C-Pop/K-Pop/J-Pop, fantaserye/telefantasya, komiks, lakorns, Nollywood, telenovela, tokusatsu and wuxia to name a few commonly known and region-specific genre terms. We welcome artworks, graphics, mixes, podfics, stories, vids and potentially other types of fanworks in English, in non-English languages or in both, particularly in English dialects and non-English languages associated with chromatic cultures.

We consider a fandom to be rare if it meets the following criteria:
  • less than 1,500 English-language stories on major multifandom archives;
  • less than 15,000 artworks, 100 podfics and 350 vids (in any languages) on major multifandom archives;
  • no dedicated fandom-specific challenge that has run annually for more than two years in a row;
  • and no dedicated fandom-specific archive or community that has more than 1,500 fanworks.
Our proposed schedule for Kaleidoscope this year is:
Promotions Week: August 9 - August 15
Nominations Period: August 9 - August 23
Dispute Period: August 27 - August 31
Sign-ups Period: September 2 - September 15
Assignments Period: September 16 - October 20
Kaleidoscope Treats: October 5 - October 26
Reveals Period: October 26 - November 2

Doers of darkness, we are happy to announce Kaleidoscope 2012! Kaleidoscope is a multimedia fanwork exchange for rare chromatic source fandoms and we are hoping to open nominations on 2012 August 9, 9:00 PM U.S.A. PDT, which we selected because it's also International Day of the World's Indigenous People & South Africa's National Women's Day.

Further details will be forthcoming, but our Kaleidoscope Site Map with links from last year's challenge will provide some insights on what to expect from the challenge. We would also like to highlight some changes we're planning on making:

  1. FSTs/fanmixes and podfics are added to our list of qualified fanwork submissions:
    • the submission requirement for FST/fanmix is 8 tracks
    • the submission requirement for podfic is 3:00 min
    • the rarity limit for podfic is 100 works
  2. The submission requirement for vids will be decreased from 1:00 min to 30 seconds
  3. The fandom limits will increase from three (3) to five (5) - in other words, the maximum number (no minimum) of fandoms a person can nominate, the number (no more, no less) of fandoms a person can request, and the minimum number (no maximum) of fandoms a person can offer will be five (5)
  4. Start Kaleidoscope Treats period officially on the first default deadline which amounts to three (3) official weeks
  5. Crosslinking and/or crossposting Kaleidoscope posts to Tumblr on our [tumblr.com profile] dark-agenda account

In addition, nominations and sign-ups will be entirely hosted on Archive of Our Own (AO3) this year. As a result, participants will need an account on AO3. If you don't have an AO3 account at AO3 and would like to participate in Kaleidoscope, please leave your email address on our Archive of Our Own Invite List for Kaleidoscope form. We'll try our best to ensure that you'll receive an invitation for the challenge or offer alternatives to participating, e.g. [community profile] dark_agenda acting as a proxy for participants.

Another change involves our promotions period. This year, we plan to host a week of Kaleidoscope fandom promotions from 2012 August 9 - August 15 during the first week of the nominations period. While we encourage you to make fandom promotion posts in general, Promotion Week is an official advertising timeframe in which you can enable and cajole your fellow doers of darkness into the rare chromatic fandoms of your choice -- and thus increase their chances of being nominated for Kaleidoscope! ;) Promotion posts may include but are not limited to manifestos, meta, picspams, primers, and resource lists. Our goal is to have five fandom promotion posts for each day of Promotion Week, and you may sign up for post dates in the comments below.

We especially encourage promotions of fandoms involving sources, characters and/or people from mis- and underrepresented cultures and/or with other mis- and underrepresented identities. Last year's promotion fest and list of promotion posts may provide some inspirations: Africa, Dis/ability, First Nations, Latin America and the Caribbean, GLBTQI characters, “Rec me!” Comment Meme and Masterlist of Promotion Posts!

Feel free to share any questions, comments, or concerns that you may have regarding the challenge or the changes we're planning! Consider this the challenge feedback request we never got around to posting and let us know how we can improve and streamline the challenge! As always, you can email us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com, comment here, or PM us at [personal profile] dark_administrator/[livejournal.com profile] darkadmn.

  1. Doers of darkness, we are happy to announce that [personal profile] arobynsung, [personal profile] snowynight and [personal profile] yifu are joining the [community profile] dark_agenda mod team! Please join us in welcoming them aboard. We look forward to working together to improve your experiences with our challenges and our community. :)

  2. Our apologies to those who contacted us about promoting challenges and communities of interest on [community profile] dark_agenda. We have been very slow in our communications and as a result, we've updated our policy to explicitly welcome promotions of communities, challenges and projects that, in accordance with [community profile] dark_agenda's goals, focus on or actively encourage inclusion of chromatic sources, characters and people. There's no need to privately contact us, but if you are unsure about a specific challenge, community or project, you can still contact us via PM ([personal profile] dark_administrator/[livejournal.com profile] darkadmn) or email us at darkadmn@gmail.com.

  3. Finally, please stay tuned for this year's Kaleidoscope fanwork exchange! We are still discussing the details, but we hope to have some information for you soon!

Hello doers of darkness -- We're taking a quick break from Kaleidoscope (less than two days!) to discuss some non-Kaleidoscope related things. A while back, we had a request for a general [community profile] dark_agenda's AO3 collection and now it's finally here:

Dark Agenda Archive

Dark Agenda Archive is a collection for fanworks created in the spirit of Dark Agenda to promote representation and responsible portrayal of chromatic characters and sources, but not produced for any other challenges we've hosted, e.g. Chromatic Remix, Chromatic Yuletide, Kaleidoscope and Racebending Revenge.

We welcome artworks, fiction, graphics, vids and other fanworks in English, in non-English languages or in both, but particularly in English dialects and non-English languages associated with chromatic cultures, from all sources with chromatic characters or people, especially sources by chromatic creators: from animations to books & literature to folklore & mythology to movies to music to real people to sequential art to theater to TV shows to video games and including anime/manga/manhua/manhwa, Bollywood, C-Pop/K-Pop/J-Pop, fantaserye/telefantasya, komiks, lakorns, Nollywood, telenovela, tokusatsu and wuxia to name a few commonly known and region-specific genre terms. However, any fanworks submitted to this collection must be centered around at least one chromatic character.
We've also set up collections for past submissions from Chromatic Remix Redux and Chromatic Yuletide 2009 so feel free to add fanworks to the above three collections.

On the topic of Chromatic Yuletide, you've probably guessed it, but we will not be running Chromatic Yuletide this year. However, we welcome posts brainstorming for nominations of chromatic fandoms, resources posts of nominated chromatic fandoms and so on; and, of course, our past Chromatic Yuletide posts have lots of links and resources that might be helpful for those participating [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year and beyond.

There are also other challenges where we collectively could promote responsible representation of chromatic characters. In fact, we were recently pointed toward a discussion on the pattern of chromatic women being particularly underrepresented in fanworks centered around women at [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen, a Rare Women Fic Exchange, so we encourage doers of darkness to join in the discussion of eligible fandoms and rare-ness to increase the presence of chromatic women.

We also encourage doers of darkness to check out [community profile] ladiesbigbang. Postings have started and several submissions focused on chromatic women!

Hello doers of darkness! We're excited to announce Chromatic Beta, a mailing list centering around chromatic sources where you can offer or request beta services for a particular fandom or culture, ethnicity, language, religion or other identity. Our goal is to promote responsible portrayal of chromatic characters among others in fanworks.
