Re: ok, now that I've finished failing & sat down to read the thing

I was hoping you would weigh in on this! Yes, the reason why we don't even have a tentative cutoff for fanart yet is because of this very issue, which we were hoping to get more perspectives on.

I did my own searches on Pixiv with various fandoms I was familiar with, and thought that maybe the threshold should be about 5000. But if Blue Exorcist is at 12,000, maybe we should be looking at a threshold as high as 15,000. (This would still disqualify the Big 3...)

I do think that there are some anime/manga fandoms that are very popular in English-language fandoms but don't have a large fanfiction presence for various reasons, and a lot of the fannish engagement in those circles does occur through fanart sites like Pixiv, which was the main reason for including those sites in the first place. It would be nice if we could have different sets of qualifying fandoms based on type of fanwork, but unfortunately, I don't think that's technically feasible given our current tools...

In any case, we will definitely end up with a high fanart threshold, but the question is what that threshold should be. I think we might have to do some concerted data-gathering on Pixiv and deviantART to find a good cutoff, as well as allow people to nominate edge cases and hash out eligibility of the borderline fandoms during the dispute process.

ETA: Also wanted to add, if you have any further thoughts/ideas on the rarity criteria, let me know!
