Beta Resources Post

If you can offer your beta skills for a particular fandom, or culture, ethnicity, language, religion or other identity, please comment here! We will be making a list of all the offers so that people have an easy way to find the help they need.

If you have specific needs, feel free also to post here requesting a beta; anonymous comments will be unscreened, and can be replied to by a beta letting you know how to contact them. To maintain challenge anonymity, we are also happy to act as go-between if you have exhausted all other resources; just email us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com.

DO REMEMBER: No beta is a magical minority fairy! They are not the One True Arbitrator for their People, and cannot be held responsible for other people finding fault with your story. Also, it is best to have done your own research and leg-work before asking your beta for help.

Also check out the Official beta post over on [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, which also has detailed instructions for how to go into yuletide chat and wrangle a hippo for beta help.

If you think you are going to write a last minute treat or extra story in a fandom, do try to plan for a beta in advance, because we cannot promise to be able to find you a last minute beta!

Beta Services

[identity profile] azn-jack-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-11-18 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You can email me at aznjackfiend@aol.com.

I know Spanish, though not 100% fluently anymore. I can beta on Japanese-American issues/culture. I can do secondary cultural beta-ing in these areas: that is, check the very basic stuff and refer on to other resources if anything goes more in-depth.

- Japan
- African-American
- Mexican-American
- Cuban-American
- US-centric POC issues in general

I'm a Buddhist and could do basic checks on Buddhist-related questions.

Hmm, I really can't begin to list fandoms... I'm only really active in a big non-Yuletide fandom. I watch some wuxia movies. I don't really watch a lot of anime except for Miyazaki and other really popular ones. I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy.

I'm not sure if this even counts for here, cos while it's minority it's not chromatic, but I'm Jewish and am happy to beta anything involving Jewish characters for cultural / religious accuracy.

Language: Hindi
Fandoms: Literature/film from the Indian subcontinent

I can do Japanese history from Meiji on backward. I specialize in premodern, so particularly Heian and Kamakura era stuff.
hl: Drawing of Ada Lovelace as a young child, reading a Calculus book (Default)

[personal profile] hl 2010-12-09 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I can beta Spanish (I'm fluent -- a native speaker who still lives in a Spanish speaking country), particularly latinoamerican (Argentinian, but I can manage a small bit of slang and usual speech patterns of some other countries, as well, and check with the wide internet and some people I know if there are doubts). Culturally, I can only check for Argentina (Buenos Aires; south, think Bariloche; and north, think Formosa), though I could also ask specifics questions about Spain, Paraguay & Mexico to friends.

Doubt anyone would need it, but I'm here in any case.

I'm happy to help out if anyone needs Australian cultural information - no personal experience in terms of indigenous issues but my boyfriend did Aboriginal Studies so I can second-handedly direct people to resources on case studies, policy and statistical information in that area. Just thought I'd offer since nobody else seems to have.

Hi! I would be very happy to have a beta with knowledge of Korean history and culture.

Relatedly, if there is anyone who is fluent in Korean and could help me with a couple of translation/transliteration questions, I would be very grateful.

I'm American but have been living in Japan (Kansai) for 20 years. I can beta for Japanese culture (modern, Kansai region) and Japanese language (non-native). I can beta for Buddhism and Shinto, as well as a few new religions (Mahikari, can ask friend re Soka Gakkai). I will gladly beta Japanese names for your OCs.

Fandoms: old-school anime (Gatchaman, Yamato, Gegege no Kitaro), modern kids' anime (Pokemon, Sazae-san, Maruko-chan, BeyBlade, Inazuma, Doraemon, Keroro Gunso, Dragonball are the ones my kids watch off the top of my head), Hayao Miyazaki's films, old dramas like Furikaereba Yatsu ga Iru and Hitotsu Yane no Shita. I am absolutely clueless about real people.

I have also lived in West Africa (early 80s), on the very slim offchance that someone is writing in Red Dust on Green Leaves fandom.
kairia: Akito from Fruits Basket (Default)

Can offer beta services for Urdu, Islam, Pakistani culture. When it comes to religion and culture, please note that I've been raised in a Sunni Muslim family and am Urdu-speaking but not technically Muhajir ^^

I can do Chinese-American culture. Worth noting: I'm a 1.5-gen immigrant, US east coaster (NYC area), Taiwanese-Chinese, have limited knowledge of Mandarin only (can speak, can't write).
beatrice_otter: Uhura and Uhura Prime (Too awesome for one timeline)

[personal profile] beatrice_otter 2010-12-13 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I request beta services here? I would love to get my story betaed by someone who knows Puerto Rican culture, particularly New York Puerto Rican culture. Somebody who could help with Spanish would be awesome, but not necessary.

[personal profile] troisroyaumes 2010-12-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I forgot to comment as well: Korean language (read/write/speak), Korean-American culture, can also help with research for Korean culture/ethnicity on account of having access to Korean-language resources.
starlady: Kermit the Frog, at Yuletide (yuletide)

[personal profile] starlady 2010-12-14 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can do Japan and Japanese and most if not all of the Japanese origin or language fandoms nominated (it'd be easier to ask on a case-by-case basis than me listing all of them at this point, I think). I've researched just about every period of Japanese society at at least a shallow level, with a particular focus on modern/contemporary and ancient Japan. I'm not the person to ask about Buddhism in Japan except for how it relates to the moden period and the Asia-Pacific Wars, though I can do Shinto and Christianity.
surpassingly: (uni: we've survived our fairy tales)

Ah, wow, super late, I'm sorry, but I can beta for things related to the Philippines (culture, places) and in the Filipino language, and fandoms for Philippine literature.
