Hello doers of darkness! First off, we're still looking for your thoughts and feedback!

Secondly, as we've stated in the above post, our challenge is opened to New Year's Resolution 2011 submissions. The New Year's Resolution Challenge allows anyone to write and post stories from prompts made by [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide participants and non-participant pinch hitters (no lengths restriction) so we encourage anyone who's thinking of participating to find prompts from chromatic sources and/or that feature chromatic characters and fill them!

[personal profile] troisroyaumes wrote a Python script and has generated for us an Excel document from the Yuletide Complete List of 2010 Prompts to make it easier to search for prompts. There are some weird formating issues due to how Python renders letters with accents, but you can download the file here (text version) or view it directly here (html version).

And there's of course our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Prompts spreadsheet (html version) over which we're looking to transfer relevant information from the Yuletide 2010 Complete List of Prompts. If you like data mining and repetitive tasks, we would love your help in this project! ) Thank you!

Some final notes: You'll need an AO3 account to upload your stories to both the New Year's Resolution 2011 and Chromatic Yuletide 2010 collections. The current invite list is about ~800 people long so if you need an invite, let us know! We have invite codes to send.

To post to a collection, AO3 wrote a tutorial on how to do so, but the easiest way is to add "chromatic_yuletide_2010" to the list of collection names under the Post to Collections/Challenges: field (e.g. chromatic_yuletide_2010, nyr2011) in the Post New Work interface.

Authors have been revealed and [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide has opened an AO3 collection for New Year's Resolution 2011, thus, marking the end of the main [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide challenge.

Last year, [community profile] dark_agenda was started as a collective effort to promote representation for chromatic sources and characters in [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide. This year, with your continued help and support, we extended our effort and sought to provide more resources. Among them included the lists of Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Fandoms & Characters (html version), Chromatic Yuletide Fandom Promotion Posts, Source-Sharing Resources, Chromatic Yuletide Beta Offers, Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Prompts (html version), Critiques & Common Pitfalls and Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Stories & Resources. We amassed:
And our challenge AO3 collection received ~260 submissions!

Thank you for all the participants, beta volunteers, readers, wranglers and passersby who contributed to and supported Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Challenge -- we can not truly thank you all enough!

Of course, our AO3 collection will remain open for New Year's Resolution 2011 submissions and we will continue to collect more fandom meta tags, requests and stories. (For New Year's Resolution 2011, we would love more help in adding requests from Yuletide Complete List of 2010 Prompts to our prompts spreadsheet -- you can use this form or add prompts directly into the spreadsheet, thank you!)

We realized that despite these awesome numbers and achievements there's still much we can to do to increase visibility of chromatic sources and characters. Stories from chromatic sources and/or featuring chromatic characters still only comprised less than 20% of [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide output and the percentages for stories from African, First Nation, Latin American and South/Southeast/West Asian sources are even depressingly lower (some even non-existent).

With that in mind, how has your experience with Chromatic Yuletide been so far? We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback! If you participated in Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Challenge:
  • To which challenge components did you commit yourself and how did it go?
  • Did you have specific goals in mind while writing your story? What were they?
  • Do you have any tips and tricks for writing chromatic sources or characters you'd like to share?
  • How were [community profile] dark_agenda helpful for you in achieving your goals? And what do you think [community profile] dark_agenda could do to be more helpful?
  • How effective were the promo posts? Were there some formats that worked better than others?
  • Was the information provided on the beta list sufficient? Are there other categories that we should include for next year?
As readers:
  • What were your expectations for the Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Challenge? And did the challenge meet them?
  • For [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide stories in general this year, what were some portrayals of chromatic sources and characters that work for you? What didn't? How do you think those latter portrayals could be better?
  • What do you wish to see next year with regards to chromatic source and character representation?

The Yuletide Madness collection has gone live. Many thanks to all the writers who contributed to our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 collection, down to the last minute!

Once again, we're in the process of collecting all the chromatic Yuletide stories in a master list, and we're planning on including stories written for Yuletide Madness too. If you have links and/or recs, particularly to any stories that may not have been added directly to our collection, please leave a comment, and we'll add it to our list.

We've mentioned in the previous post that we'll be compiling a master list of all the [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide stories from chromatic sources or that feature chromatic characters, including those that may not have been specifically written for Chromatic Yuletide 2010 as well or posted to the AO3 Collection. We're still collecting links, but we've finished wrangling all the revealed stories in the Chromatic Yuletide AO3 Collection so here there are!

As we've said, the list is by no means final so we welcome any corrections and/or additions. Please feel free to also add your own links and/or recs for the story listed (or not yet listed) here!

Happy reading, doers of darkness -- and keep on filling those chromatic Yuletide Madness prompts!

Status Update (Jan. 03, 18:34:37 UTC): Not done! We've wrangled though almost all Yuletide 2010, Yuletide Madness 2010 and New Year's Resolution 2011 posted to Chromatic Yuletide 2010 AO3 Collection and/or tagged with "Dark Agenda", "Chromatic Yuletide", "Chromatic Source", "Chromatic Character", "Character of Color" or variations of. But if we've missed any stories, let us know!

Doers of darkness, the moment we have all been waiting for…Yuletide is now live!

You can check out the Yuletide fics that were written for [community profile] dark_agenda at the Chromatic Yuletide 2010 collection (list of fandoms).

We're working on compiling a master list of all the chromatic Yuletide fics, including those that may not have been specifically posted to the collection. As you go forth to read and rec, please help us out by linking to any chromatic Yuletide stories you've read or any rec lists that feature chromatic Yuletide stories.

Also, if you are using the bookmarking function as you read on AO3, we suggest adding a "Chromatic Yuletide" tag (or "Chromatic Source", "Chromatic Character", etc.) when appropriate to help your fellow readers find these fics!

Meanwhile, Yuletide Madness is still open for posting, so keep filling those prompts.

The complete list of Yuletide 2010 prompts is now available!

As you browse through the list, if you see any interesting prompts that qualify for our challenge that are not already in our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Prompts spreadsheet, please feel free to use this form to add it.

The Yuletide mods have announced that Yuletide Madness will close on December 26, 12 PM EST, which gives us more time to write that intriguing prompt for our favorite chromatic fandoms.

The Yuletide Madness 2010 collection on AO3 is open!

We would like to encourage all of you to browse through our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Prompts spreadsheet (html version) to write extra treats that qualify for our challenge. (Here's a guide to sorting and filtering.)

If your prompt qualifies for the challenge but isn't in our spreadsheet, go ahead and add it! You can either directly input it into the spreadsheet or use this form.

If you don't know whether your fic qualifies or not, you can check our masterlist of Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Fandoms and Characters. (Our list isn't complete, however, so if your fandom and characters qualify but aren't on the list, go ahead and add it to our collection.)

Remember:
  • If you're posting a fic for a chromatic source and/or featuring a chromatic character, whether it be your assignment, pinch hit or treat, please crosspost it to our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 collection. The easiest way is to type in chromatic_yuletide_2010 to the "Post to Collections/Challenges:" field.

  • Tag your fic with any applicable tags to make it easier to find! E.g. Chromatic Source, Chromatic Character, Character of Color, etc.
Let the last-minute gift-giving begin!

[archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide assignments are due 11:59 pm Monday, December 20th North America EST. That's less than 26 hours away! Good luck to those of you who are finishing your assignments!

And, doers of darkness, remember to:
In conclusion: ZOMBIE BEARS!
dark_administrator: (chromatic yuletide 2)
[personal profile] dark_administrator
As we've said before, there are less than 8 days before [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide are due. We've started talking a bit about white/Western/other sources and common pitfalls in writing chromatic characters and non-Western cultures, but now we want to remind you of a few things:
  • As you're finishing your story, browse through our Beta Resources Post to find someone to beta your story or offer your own beta services!

  • If you're finished with your story and it fits our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Challenge, remember to also post it to [community profile] dark_agenda's Chromatic Yuletide 2010 AO3 Collection! In addition, we suggest tagging your story with "Chromatic Source" and/or "Chromatic Character" as well as a range of tags used at AO3 such as "Asian Character," "Black Character," "Latin@ Character," "Native American Character," "Muslim Character," "Hindu Character," etc. (or create them if they aren't available!).

  • If you're participating in Yuletide Madness or thinking about it -- and remember, you don't have to be officially signed up for [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide to participate and there are no length restriction for Yuletide Madness stories, be sure to check our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Prompts spreadsheet (html version). If you find the ~500 prompts overwhelming, we have a guide for sorting and filtering those information.

Of some interests, prompts belonging to participants whose original writers have defaulted are highlighted in purple. They have all been assigned a pinch hitter already, but maybe you would like to help make sure those participants receive something once the challenge goes live!
On that note, we still have AO3 invites if you need one!
dark_administrator: (chromatic yuletide 3)
[personal profile] dark_administrator
There are less than 8 days (!!!) before [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide assignments are due. We hope you're making good progress on your assignment and wish you luck. For those who are already done (!!!!!), congratulations!

In the meantime, there are a few things we want to address. One of the components of our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Challenge is:
[...] if you end up writing problematic source, engage in fixing it: finding the invisible people of colour and putting them back in, writing the back story for a character without tying it into the white people's narratives, critiquing by making explicit the blind spots and bigotry and flaws in the celebrated white heroes of the narrative.
We encourage you to be aware of how the source for which you're writing in particular portrays race, ethnicity, culture and the intersectionality of these issues with others, especially when the source is not created by people from the identity it portrays.

Last year, we posted about some common pitfalls while writing outside your own culture and how to attempt to avoid them, where we also highlighted a discussion about white and Western consumption of manga and anime, and collected critique posts of some white/Western/other sources.

This year, we'd like to offer similar resources. We're trying to collect a central list of critique posts on the topics of race, ethnicity and culture for white/Western/other sources so if you know of any links, we would love to be linked to them!

List of Critique Posts for White/Western/Other Sources )

We'd also like to discuss some common pitfalls in writing chromatic characters and non-Western cultures. What problems have you encountered as a writer and/or a reader? And how do you think they can be countered against?

Here are some questions that might help you ground your writing for this challenge: What other questions should we ask themselves? And what other posts or articles have helped you clarify your writing process?

Reminders and Friendly Suggestions! )

The short and simple version:
Step 1 - Officially sign up for our challenge!
Step 2 - Start signing up for Yuletide 2010. (If they seem confusing, check out these videos walking you through the process or this transcript of the videos.)
Step 3 - Use our masterlist of Chromatic Fandoms and Characters (html version) to populate your offers and requests. Use your freeform option wisely! (Suggestions: 'Chromatic yuletide', 'character of colour', 'fix it fic')
Step 4 - Scan the list of needy fandoms to see what fandoms you can rescue with a request or offer.
Step 5 - Finish your sign-ups, and wait to receive an emailed copy of them in your inbox.
Step 6 - Write a 'Dear Author' letter, post it to your journal or the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide's official Dear Yuletide Writer post. (Optionally, you can write this before you sign up and include a link to it in your requests.)
Step 7 - Enter your fandom, character and request details into our Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Prompts form (spreadsheet) along with a link to your 'Dear Author' letters.
Step 8 - Sign up at our beta resources post for whatever fandom- or culture-specific betas you think you can offer.
Step 9 - You're done! (Except for all the obligatory panicking about receiving your assignment, then writing it, then uploading it, etc.)

Remember, you can always comment or PM us with any questions, or email us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com

Yay! Thanks for doing this with us!

If you can offer your beta skills for a particular fandom, or culture, ethnicity, language, religion or other identity, please comment here! We will be making a list of all the offers so that people have an easy way to find the help they need.

If you have specific needs, feel free also to post here requesting a beta; anonymous comments will be unscreened, and can be replied to by a beta letting you know how to contact them. To maintain challenge anonymity, we are also happy to act as go-between if you have exhausted all other resources; just email us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com.

DO REMEMBER: No beta is a magical minority fairy! They are not the One True Arbitrator for their People, and cannot be held responsible for other people finding fault with your story. Also, it is best to have done your own research and leg-work before asking your beta for help.

Also check out the Official beta post over on [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, which also has detailed instructions for how to go into yuletide chat and wrangle a hippo for beta help.

If you think you are going to write a last minute treat or extra story in a fandom, do try to plan for a beta in advance, because we cannot promise to be able to find you a last minute beta!

Doers of darkness, the full list of Yuletide 2010 Eligible Fandoms has been published! Please remember to check your chromatic creator and chromatic character fandoms to make sure they are correctly listed; the Yuletide corrections post is here.

Some notes that may be useful:
  • If the Yuletide Eligible Fandoms list opens without line breaks, try saving the document and opening it in WordPad.
  • If you're having trouble viewing the special characters and you're using Firefox, go to View > Character Encoding > Auto-detect > Universal.

Also, we've started noting eligible fandoms in our masterlist of Chromatic Fandoms and Characters (html version) so feel free to use the list as a reference while you're checking fandoms.

Speaking of, we've created an official mailing list for all our spreadsheet wrangling. If you're interested in helping us wrangle our spreadsheets of DOOM or in keeping up-to-date with our spreadsheet news, please join the group and read our Welcome & Introduction post -- or you could just subscribe to the mailing list's feeds.

Hello doers of darkness! First of all, thank you so much for all of your help on the nominations spreadsheet. [personal profile] dharmavati, [personal profile] eruthros, and [personal profile] thingswithwings, you all continue to be amazing, and [personal profile] livrelibre, thank you for jumping in as well! In addition to our spreadsheet wranglers, we would also like to thank [personal profile] monanotlisa and [personal profile] plazmah for making us our lovely [community profile] dark_agenda and Chromatic Yuletide icons.

Secondly, a signal-boost while we wait for the Yuletide 2010 fandoms list: [community profile] access_fandom has compiled a list of disabled characters in nominated Yuletide fandoms! As you all know, [community profile] dark_agenda's mission is to promote the representation of chromatic characters in fanworks, but we would love to support more frequent and positive representation of other mis- and underrepresented groups, and to talk about intersectionality while we are at it. Thus, we urge you to revisit the list of disabled chromatic characters that we created for the Festibility challenge, and to let us know if there are any that we can add to it. You may also have noticed that we have an Intersectionality column in our spreadsheet, where chromatic characters who are disabled and/or identify as LGBTQI, Jewish, Muslim, etc. can be highlighted.

Lastly, if you're looking for a source for [community profile] dark_agenda purposes, we have a post locked to the community that may be helpful.

So, this post hasn't been approved by [personal profile] dark_administrator but I think she'll forgive me :)

I've got two nomination spots still open, because y'all are awesome and have already nominated a bunch of my fandoms. *hugs d_a*

In the hopes that there are other folks who have open nomination slots, or folks who don't really care about Yuletide noms but are willing to help out the Agenda, I'd like to put out a last-minute call for chromatic fandoms you want to see nominated that you didn't have enough slots for. Please post here with everything someone completely unfamiliar with your fandom would need to know to nominate it.

And folks who have nomination slots, or folks who aren't planning to nominate at all, please pitch in to turn Yuletide chromatic!

With the help of [personal profile] dharmavati, [personal profile] eruthros, and [personal profile] thingswithwings, to whom we owe many thanks, we've been compiling nominated fandoms with chromatic creators and characters from your comments, the Yuletide Nominated Fandoms List, and the Yuletide Characters List in the Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Nominations List spreadsheet (html version).

We've been following titling and tagging conventions from [livejournal.com profile] yuletide and AO3 and will need help adding and verifying information, so if you have time and energy to spare, we would appreciate your assistance! The spreadsheet is set so anyone (no Google account needed) can edit, and Google Docs is designed so multiple editors can work on a document simultaneously and all their edits will update. We're currently working through the Yuletide Nominated Fandoms list, and you can check our status under Progress. We have also included a Color Key to explain the highlighted cells.

Speaking of nominated fandoms, as we've said before, the closer we get to 25th December 2010, the harder it will be for people to learn a new source canon so we encourage you to continue promoting your Yuletide chromatic creator or character fandoms. For the purposes of the Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Challenge, promotion posts may consist of picspams, meta/essays, character discussions, or some combination thereof, and we will be collecting links in the masterlist below.

The following list includes posts promoting chromatic sources and characters from this year and past years; parentheticals are mod notes.

Masterlist of Chromatic Yuletide Fandom Promotion Posts )

We will do our best to keep this list up to date, but there are more links at the Chromatic Yuletide 2010 Nominations post so be sure to check back there.

Lastly, are there icon makers reading? This is where we shamelessly beg for you to make us a general [community profile] dark_agenda icon and a Chromatic Yuletide Challenge one.

If you have nominated one or more fandoms that qualify for our challenge, please list them here! If you would like to brainstorm, urge other people to nominate something you might not have had a slot for, or discuss other aspects of nominations, this is the space to do it.

Do remember that the closer we get to 25th December 2010, the harder it will be for people to learn a new source canon - so this is the best time to try to woo a potential writer over into a TV series or epic 6 volume book canon.
