Below is a detailed tutorial on how to sign-up for Kaleidoscope.

How to Sign-Up for Kaleidoscope

1. Log-in to Archive of Our Own. If you don't have an account at AO3 and would like to sign-up for Kaleidoscope, please leave your email address on our Archive of Our Own Invite List for Kaleidoscope form, and we'll try our best to ensure that you'll receive an invitation for sign-ups.


2. Navigate directly to the Sign Up For Kaleidoscope Fanwork Exchange 2012 Form, or go to Kaleidoscope Fanwork Exchange 2012 main page and click on the Signup Form link located on the left navigational sidebar.


3. Scroll down to Requests. The number in parenthesis next to it, (5), indicates that you are allowed and required to make five (5) requests. For Kaleidoscope, participants must fill out exactly five (5) requests (no more, no less).






4. Scroll down to Request 1 → Fandom. The number in parenthesis and red font color next to it, (1), indicates that you are allowed and required to request one (1) fandom (no more, no less) from the list of eligible fandoms for each request. In addition, the fandom must also be unique (distinct & different) for each request.


5. Next to Request 1 → Fandom, select the first fandom from the list of eligible fandoms that you're requesting.
   
   Click on Show all [X Number] checkboxes to expand the fandom sub-interface box and display all fandoms available without boxing them into a smaller sub-interface, and click on Collapse checkboxes to contract the list of fandoms available and box them into a smaller sub-interface.


6. Scroll up to Request 1 → Title and enter the name of the first fandom you've requesting in the free-text field.


7. Scroll down to Request 1 → Character. The numbers in parenthesis next to it, (0 - 10), indicate that you are allowed to request up to ten (10) character or none (0) from the list of eligible characters or people for the fandom selected.


8. Next Request 1 → Character, select the free-text field and allow for the text cursor to blink for a couple of seconds while AO3 loads up information. A pop-up menu will appear with a list of characters and people available for the selected fandom. From the menu, click on a character or person to select them, and repeat the process for multiple character or person requests.
   
   
   
   
   
   Or manually type the character or person's name that you're requesting for the selected fandom. Multiple character or person requests are separate by a comma. The character or person requested must be from the list of eligible characters and people for the selected fandom, and they must be typed out exactly as they are displayed in our Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations list.
   
   If you're requesting all and any of the characters or people from list of eligible characters and people for the selected fandom, then check the Any field box underneath the free-text field for Character.
   
   To remove an entered character or person, click on the X button surrounded in oval and in red font color next to the character or person's name. Double-click on the character or person's name will allow you to edit it.


9. Scroll down to Request 1 → Freeforms. The numbers in parenthesis and red font color next to it, (1 - 6), indicate that you are required to request one (1) fanwork type and are allowed to request up to six (6) fanwork types from the choices of Fanart, Fanfiction, Fanmix, Fanvids, Graphics and Podfic.


10. Next to Request 1 → Freeforms, select the fanwork type(s) you're requesting for the selected fandom. Or if you're requesting all and any of the eligible fanwork types, Fanart, Fanfiction, Fanmix, Fanvids, Graphics and Podfic, check the Any field box underneath Freeform.


11. Scroll down to Request 1 → Dear Doer of Darkness Letter and enter a link to your Dear Doer of Darkness Letter in the free-text field. If you have not written a letter or don't intend to write one, you may link to your main public journaling account if you have one or skip this step and leave this field blank, and you may edit your sign-up form later to add a link.


12. Scroll down to Request 1 → Optional Details and fill out the optional details of your request for the fandom selected, if you have any, in the free-text field; otherwise, skip this step and leave this field blank.


13. Repeat steps 4-12 for Request 2-5.


14. Scroll down to Offers. The numbers in parenthesis, (5 - 10), indicate that you are required to make five (5) offers and are allowed to make up to ten (10) offers.






15. Scroll down to Offer 1 → Fandom. The number in parenthesis and red font color next to it, (1), indicates that you are allowed and required to offer one (1) fandom (no more, no less) from the list of eligible fandoms for each offer. In addition, the fandom must also be unique (distinct & different) for each offer.


16. Next to Offer 1 → Fandom, select the first fandom from the list of eligible fandoms that you're offering.


17. Scroll up to Offer 1 → Title and enter the name of the first fandom you've requesting in the free-text field.


18. Scroll down to Offer 1 → Character. The numbers in parenthesis next to it, (0 - 10), indicate that you are allowed to offer up to ten (10) character or none (0) from the list of eligible characters or people for the fandom selected.


19. Next to Offer 1 → Character, select the free-text field and from the pop-up menu that appears, select the character(s) or person(s) that you're offering for the selected fandom, or manually type the character(s) or person(s)' name. If you're offering all and any of the characters or people from list of eligible characters and people for the selected fandom, then check the Any field box underneath the free-text field for Character.


20. Scroll down to Offer 1 → Freeforms. The numbers in parenthesis and red font color next to it, (1 - 6), indicate that you are required to offer one (1) fanwork type and are allowed to offer up to six (6) fanwork types from the choices of Fanart, Fanfiction, Fanmix, Fanvids, Graphics and Podfic.


21. Next to Offer 1 → Freeforms, select the fanwork type(s) you're offering for the selected fandom. Or if you're offering all and any of the eligible fanwork types, Fanart, Fanfiction, Fanmix, Fanvids, Graphics and Podfic, check the Any field box underneath Freeform.


22. Repeat steps 15-21 for Offer 2-5. If you would like to make more offers, click on Add another offer? (Up to 10 allowed.) and Offer 6 will appear. To remove the offer, select Remove at the end.


23. Once you've finished filling out the Sign Up For Kaleidoscope Fanwork Exchange 2012 Form, click Submit.


24. Go to Kaleidoscope Fanwork Exchange 2012 main page and click on Your Signup to review and edit your offers and requests.
    
    
    
    
    Select Edit prompt to modify a particular offer or request, or select Edit or Edit whole signup to modify the entire sign-up form. To delete your sign-up form, select Delete.

Easy-to-consume canons post

I vaguely recall a post about short, easy to obtain canons last year, could we have one this year? I am unfamiliar with a lot of the canons, but would happily watch and offer to draw for music videos etc, and I don't know which ones they are!

Having modded a demographic-specific community myself I know how tough and also annoying this kind of question can be to answer, but I'm wondering how circumspect requests (and entries) should be with regard to non-nominated white characters. For example, Knives Chau is one of few chromatic characters in Scott Pilgrim, and most of her significant canon relationships are with white people. Thus most shipfic I could ask for would in some sense go out of the scope of the challenge - but given that her love life is the number one catalyst to her character development, it is also relevant to who she is. Should I consider requesting such shipfic basically off-limits and restrict myself to gen or more obscure chromatic relationships, or throw in a simple "if you feel like going there I really enjoy Knives/Kim"?

Hi -- requests and fanworks containing relationships that chromatic characters or people have with white characters or people are fine as long as the chromatic characters are the focus of the fanworks (& requests) and, if possible, the point of view characters.

Relevant to one of my planned requests but possibly also more broadly, is there a policy on crossovers with sources with white creators (e.g. is it okay to suggest in my letter/optional details that a Doctor Who crossover could be fun, although of course not as my ONLY suggestion)? I didn't see anything in the FAQ addressing crossovers with ineligible fandoms....

Hi! Sorry for taking so long to respond, but after discussion, our mod team agree it's fine to request crossovers; however, we would prefer if these crossover requests focus on sources by chromatic creators presently.

Okay, cool! Thought that might be the case, but wanted to be sure (I long for someone to write Martha Jones and Sei Shonagon fighting alien crime in Heian Japan, but it's a rather specialized wish...maybe Yuletide will produce it someday).
