Yuletide 2010 Eligible Fandoms

Doers of darkness, the full list of Yuletide 2010 Eligible Fandoms has been published! Please remember to check your chromatic creator and chromatic character fandoms to make sure they are correctly listed; the Yuletide corrections post is here.

Some notes that may be useful:
  • If the Yuletide Eligible Fandoms list opens without line breaks, try saving the document and opening it in WordPad.
  • If you're having trouble viewing the special characters and you're using Firefox, go to View > Character Encoding > Auto-detect > Universal.

Also, we've started noting eligible fandoms in our masterlist of Chromatic Fandoms and Characters (html version) so feel free to use the list as a reference while you're checking fandoms.

Speaking of, we've created an official mailing list for all our spreadsheet wrangling. If you're interested in helping us wrangle our spreadsheets of DOOM or in keeping up-to-date with our spreadsheet news, please join the group and read our Welcome & Introduction post -- or you could just subscribe to the mailing list's feeds.

Dia Reeves' Bleeding Violet can be in the intersectional column. She has a disability (bipolar disorder).

The spreadsheet asks, about the Louise Erdrich Birchbark House series, "Yes (Angeline, Bizheen, Deydey, Fishtail, Nokomis, Old Tallow, Omakayas, Pinch, Yellow Kettle) ? Can someone who's read the books check this list? I think all of these characters are Ojibwa but I'm not sure." This is correct. The characters are all Ojibwa. Technically, Deydey is biracial (Ojibwa/French) and several of the characters are his children, but he identifies firmly as Ojibwa.

The spreadsheet notes about Malinda Lo's Ash, "No (? Author notes characters are Asian in her head but little to no textual evidence)". This is correct. The author is Chinese-American and she has a couple of blog posts about how she left the characters open, how it's a fantasy world in which "Asia" per se would not be meaningful but she left physical description open, and there are a few cultural notes she says would only be visible to anthropologists.

Since you have that notes column there, it might be worth mentioning that A Great and Terrible Beauty has a terrible canonical presentation of race, and anyone who wants to read a new book in order to get a new chromatic character should be prepared for much rage.

I'm a little bit confused about The Book Thief. The book takes place in Nazi Germany. There is a secret Jew, and Death, but I'm not sure who is being seen as chromatic. I mean, in the context of Nazi Germany Jews certainly count as chromatic but I assume that the challenge doesn't want to open up to all "Jews in anti-Semitic countries/times" sources.

Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian should probably be intersectional for disability. Junior has a host of issues.

I added more characters to the Kate Shugak fandom. Also, I'd like to add Alaya Johnson's Moonshine and My Name Is Kim Sam Soon to the list, but I'm afraid to do so in case I break it. :/

And I'm pretty sure Roque in the Losers (comic) is white, though he is played by Idris Elba in the movie.

For Moonshine, Amir and Kardal are chromatic.

I already added the characters to the Kate Shugak fandom.

Thanks!

Your spreadsheet is missing Outrageous Fortune, which is a NZ tv series. Chromatic characters are Falani, Jared "Munter" Mason, Kasey Mason and Wayne Judd. I've looked at your welcome and introduction post, so is it okay if I just go ahead and add it? If someone else is working on O then I can leave it.

I would like to respectfully point out that one of the fandoms I nominated, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), has at least two characters of color, Bennett Marco and Eugenie Rose. Yes, I realize it's a little bit confusing since the characters were played by white actors in the original version. :)

I'm not sure where the line is for "chromatic" for fantasy settings but here's how I would mark the Final Fantasy games I know:

ff8: Kiros, Raijin; ff10: Wakka (not sure if he's just darkly tan or not as he is an islander), the Al Bhed are an ethnic minority in the game's world and there are various mentions of racism against them through the game (Rikku, Brother, Cid, and Gippal (x-2 only) are the main al bhed characters); ff12: Reddas, Al-Cid, possibly Fran and the other Viera.

If I notice any others I can help with as I go through the list, I will comment again!

Personally I got a Pacific Islander vibe from Wakka, so I'd definitely vote for him being counted as chromatic!

Okay, good, I'm glad that wasn't just me! (And in that case, the Besaid Aurochs would all also count.) Some of my hesitation was based on the way racism works in the game and how racist Wakka is at points.

Erm, newbie here. What should we do on that spreadsheet if a fandom has chromatic characters who are not on the Yuletide master list? (I'm thinking specifically of 'Princess' Angeline in Cherie Priest's Clockwork Century.)

Yes, thank you!

And fandoms with chromatic characters who aren't on the spreadsheet? Just add them the best we can figure out how, or leave that to the professional wranglers? (Zamira Drakasha, Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard sequence).

I don't have a dreamwidth account, but I was directed here by a discussion in #yuletide on IRC and I have two discrepancies to report in the masterlist linked above.

1. The fandom 'Legion' has two qualifying chromatic characters, not one - and the one overlooked is also one-handed. Percy Walker is the name of the character in question.

2. The fandom 'Predators' wasn't on the sheet at all and has several qualifying characters.

Thanks!

I'd think that Cuchillo would also qualify for Predators. Sorry, I'm half-asleep and not as coherent as I might be.

Odd case - "Ben 10" refers to 3 US cartoons, Ben 10 and its sequel series Ben 10 Alien Force and Ultimate Alien. The latter two shows, which are what most of the fandom is based on, have two definitely chromatic chars (Julie Yamamoto and Alan Albright) and a few others who are indeterminate. Question is whether it counts as having a chromatic creator - while the creators of the original show were white, the head writer & show runner for Alien Force/Ultimate Alien is the awesome Dwayne McDuffie.
