Beta-request post for Racebending Revenge Challenge

For Authors:
This post is where you can request for a beta with familiarity with a specific culture, race or ethnicity. Please remember that no beta, no matter how informed in their area of expertise, speaks for the entire range of people with that identity. They can help you spot some problems in your story, but their opinion of it does not equate to how everyone else should react to it. In addition, please do not dump the entire burden of accuracy on your beta; most people are far more willing to assist you when you can prove you have been proactive with your own research and self-education.

You can also look over the beta resource list generated for yuletide, although we cannot promise that the people who volunteered then might still be available or willing.

If you are unsure of what you need, it might help to summarise the context of your story and what you are looking for help with, along with a way that a beta can contact you (email, private message etc).

Awesome, I was wondering where a good place to ask would be. I'm hoping for someone who is informed about colonial India for a Holmsian remix. I want to make sure that the racism in the story is true to life and to avoid making my characters unlikable due to prevailing opinions of the time. I have a rough draft of a 4250 word fic. It's an AU for Torchwood/Doctor Who, imagining the origin story for a Chinese-American Captain Jack Hark Lee in 1937 Shanghai during the Second Sino-Japanese War aka the War of Resistance Against Japan. Jack and real!Jack are both in it (this will only make sense if you know a bit of the backstory).

I'm Japanese-American, not Chinese-American, and I really, really need a beta/Canto-pick. I did a ton of research, but I'm sure I have many errors in the names of characters and so on. If someone reads this here and can do it, that would be awesome, and if I don't hear anything in the next week I'll also try contacting the people on the list posted above. I'm hoping for someone who knows some Cantonese and knows a little bit about the time period in question... knowledge of Doctor Who/Torchwood would be helpful but not necessary. This wouldn't need to be a full beta, more of a pick for 1) character names 2) some terms 3) major historical/cultural anachronisms.

If you're still in need, I can offer my services as a time period/setting beta (I'm Chinese-American and did some study of that period of history as a grad student, though I wouldn't necessarily call myself an expert), however I don't speak Cantonese and so wouldn't be able to accurately Canto-pick.

I am Straits Chinese. I speak Mandarin, not Cantonese, but if you're using the Chinese characters I can still read them. (If you're using Romanised script, then I'd have a problem, sorry.) I have looked up the work prospects and increasing public prominence Egyptian women had in that era, but it's been a challenge to find casual information about the day-to-day life experience of Muslim Egyptian women, such as their freedom of movement and how men of the time responded to their presence.

You don't have to be an arty type (most of the audience won't be after all) And since I'm not from the Americas, any American feedback would be helpful, I'm worried I've made some huge cross-cultural blunder.

The fic is mostly set on a job in Nebraska, but it does touch on Nate's experiences growing up in Boston in the 60s/70s, and Hardison's growing up in the 90s. (Assuming the actor's ages are approximately the character's). Also stop and searches, authority, criminality and 'the race card'.
