The Racebending Revenge Challenge started last year as a protest against whitewashing in Western media and in particular The Last Airbender. The challenge was to:
Re-write one or more white characters in the fandom(s) of your choice as chromatic/non-white/PoC, in a story of at least 500 words, with some acknowledgment of how the racial difference would make a difference to the story being told.

[...] We want to know how a man called Sherlock Holmes in Victorian England would function if his skin was the colour of soot, or what Latino Dean and Sam Winchester would do to convince people to trust them, and if Buffy the Vampire Slayer can be Asian and still save the world (a lot).
It has been half a year since the challenge went live, but submissions are still trickling in. To promote these recent fanworks -- and to further promote old ones, we've compiled a masterlist of Racebending Revenge Challenge fanworks & resources.

Many thanks to all the artists, beta volunteers and writers who contributed to our challenge and to all the readers and reccers who read/viewed and supported these fanworks! ETA: We still welcome submissions here and/or at Racebending Revenge Archive of Our Own Collection.

If you have made a rec or discussion post for fanworks coming out of the Racebending Revenge challenge, please link to it here. You are also free to make recs in comments, or start discussion threads. (We have around 35 fanworks so far, yay!)

Also, [community profile] chromaticvision over on IJ is hosting a mini-challenge for recs:
There aren't nearly enough works about characters of color out there (at least we think so anyway!), but what is there is cause for celebration. Show us your recs featuring characters of color. The dates for posting recs are July 15th-July 31st.

If you don't have an IJ account, you can use your Dreamwidth open account to comment to their post, linking to recs you might have made elsewhere.

Please feel free to discuss stories honestly and critically in our community space; please also remember to keep your focus on the work, and refrain from personal statements about the author.

It's the 2nd of July in most time zones, and our challenge is live!

Head on over to the Racebending Revenge Collection over at the Archive of our Own to check out the 23 31 36 stories posted so far, and do make sure to leave feedback.

If you have posted your fanwork -- fanfiction or fanart -- elsewhere, drop a link to it here. We will edit this post so as to create a masterlist, and eventually try to link to everything from the AO3 collection.

Thank you all for your enthusiasm and support for this ficathon, and we hope that you will continue to participate in our future efforts to encourage the creation of fanworks with chromatic character and sources.

Enjoy!

Depending on what time zone you are inhabiting, it is between two to three days before our Racebending Revenge Challenge goes live! So far we have three works in the collection, we do hope there will be many more before the deadline of 2nd July 2010 (Yes, we know the Avatar: the Last Airbender release date got moved up to the 1st, but we're sticking with our original date).

So please do try to keep working on all those stories you have been talking about in comments!

Do find yourself a beta! We have a post over here to request or offer beta assistance, and you can email us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com if you really can't find anyone. We will do our best to help, but can't promise last minute miracles, so working in advance helps.

Do please consider posting your story to the Archive of Our Own collection in addition to your other journals and communities, it will make it easier for other readers to find your story. If you don't have an AO3 account, you can request a code to make one by leaving your email address in a comment to this post.
Do consider using applicable tags like "Chromatic Character", "Muslim Character", "Japanese Character" and other such racial, cultural and ethnic descriptors that might help potentials readers beyond the challenge find your story.

If your story has been written, perhaps you might want to collaborate with a fanartist to design illustrations for it: we have some discussion and offers from fanartists to peruse here, and you may wish to lure in fanartists you admire from various fandoms.

We have seen some reservations voiced about the nature of this challenge and how it fits within our goal of promoting chromatic sources and characters within fandom. After the challenge goes live, we plan to discuss some of the issues this challenge raises, and we will welcome your thoughts and reactions. For now, we ask that you consider for yourself if your fan work meets the requirement and the spirit of the challenge, and our community.

Finally, we do plan to keep the collection open to submissions beyond 2nd July 2010, so if you feel you may not make that deadline, please don't give up on what you were working on.

For Authors:
This post is where you can request for a beta with familiarity with a specific culture, race or ethnicity. Please remember that no beta, no matter how informed in their area of expertise, speaks for the entire range of people with that identity. They can help you spot some problems in your story, but their opinion of it does not equate to how everyone else should react to it. In addition, please do not dump the entire burden of accuracy on your beta; most people are far more willing to assist you when you can prove you have been proactive with your own research and self-education.

You can also look over the beta resource list generated for [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide, although we cannot promise that the people who volunteered then might still be available or willing.

If you are unsure of what you need, it might help to summarise the context of your story and what you are looking for help with, along with a way that a beta can contact you (email, private message etc).

For Betas:
Please consider leaving a comment with a little information about your background, identity or area of study as you feel it might pertain to the someone's need of your input, along with the preferred way you would like an author to get in touch with you (email, private message, etc).

If anyone has beta requests or offers that they would prefer to keep quiet, you can contact the mods for go-between assistance by emailing us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com.

There have been some great discussions happening about this challenge elesewhere (as for instance), and if you have thoughts or comments or questions about it that you'd like to share with other community members, please use this post to link to them or repost them as comments.

You can also talk about ideas you'd like to see someone take on, in the hopes of inspiring a writer looking for a topic.

In addition, this is the post where you can mention what you are working on, and ask for fanartists who might be interested in collaborating with you though images or icons or manips.

Fanartists! You are welcome to comment here with your ideas of what you would like to work on, in case there is a writer interested in collaborating with you.

Four weeks from today, on the 2nd of July, 2010, a live action movie will be opening that replaced the entirely chromatic cast of its animated TV version with all white main leads except for a brown villain. The show is Avatar: the Last Airbender, and [livejournal.com profile] racebending has been a fandom-motivated protest against it that has led to a wider organisation against whitewashing in Western media.

In support of the cause, we would like to announce a challenge ficathon:

Re-write one or more white characters in the fandom(s) of your choice as chromatic/non-white/PoC, in a story of at least 500 words, with some acknowledgment of how the racial difference would make a difference to the story being told.

ETA Gender-bending and Alternate Universe (AU) stories are permitted, though we ask that you focus on the racial implications of the difference between canonical character and the reenvisioned one.

For inspiration, you can turn to the chromatic re/casting posts masterlist, as well as collaborate with fanartists or vidders who might wish to participate.

Stories posted to the challenge collection at AO3 will be revealed on the 2nd of July, 2010; if you wish to post them elsewhere, we ask that you do so on the same date, and link to them at the dreamwidth community journal.

Some critics of the chromatic recasting meme pointed out that racial identity was integral to the characters because whiteness was not in fact a blank slate. We agree. We want to know how a man called Sherlock Holmes in Victorian England would function if his skin was the colour of soot, or what Latino Dean and Sam Winchester would do to convince people to trust them, and if Buffy the Vampire Slayer can be Asian and still save the world (a lot).

Please comment to this post in order to sign-up. You may mention the fandom(s) and/or character(s) you plan to racebend if you wish to let other people know that someone is doing them, but it is not necessary, and we welcome multiple takes on a character or fandom.

If anyone would like to help out with graphics for headers and icons for this comm here and over at A03, we would be delighted!

ETA: Our challenge is live, but we still welcome submissions! Our master list of fanworks is available at Racebending Revenge Challenge Fanworks & Resources, and links to fanworks for the challenge may be made there. We also welcome fanworks at Racebending Revenge Archive of Our Own Collection.
