Updates to the chromatic creators list

Hello!

We have been updating the chromatic creators list as we have time; please let us know if you have any additions or fandom descriptions or pimping posts to add, or if you have any questions or suggestions about classifications.

We are particularly looking for current Yuletide fandoms from Latin@, Arab, African, and Native American/First Nations/indigenous North and South American creators, as they have the least representation on our current list. Thanks for your help!

Love & Rockets is a comic by two (sometimes three) Mexican-American brothers, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez. HIGHLY AWESOME.

I wonder whether Queen - The Works (album) is eligible for the list. Four of the ten songs were written by Freddie Mercury, who was part of the Indian diaspora.

I... am going to stick this in the White/Western/Other list for now with mention of Mercury's ethnicity, though I am open to arguments for it to be reclassified.

Patriotic Knights is a Chinese TV series, so is Handsome Siblings. I nominated both but only requested the former.

Planet Ladder is a manga series about a Japanese girl traveling to other worlds.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Tactics! It's an anime and manga about a folklorist in early twentieth century Japan with a knack for naming (and so binding them to him) the creatures he encounters.

Also, I did a pimping post for Anyband here.

A few quick pimps; I might be back with more:

Shounen Onmyouji is an anime series set in Japan, which explores the training/coming-of-age of Abe no Seimei's grandson Masahiro. (Is that Heian era, still? I'm not sure!)

Wild Adapter is a manga series set in modern-day Japan- very film noir setup, with an amnesiac stray and former-and-otherwise yakuza and mysterious drugs. :D I LOVE IT TO BITS. Will probably put up a couple of artbook scans later...

In the Heights is an awesome Broadway musical set in Spanish Harlem, based around an intertwined set of day-to-day neighborhood stories. The official website is here!

ETA for Harold and Kumar, which seems to not be on the film list?

I, uh, apparently typoed one of the fandoms when I was using the form. It's supposed to be Saiunkoku Monogatari. My bad!

There's also a marvelous collection of Genji links here: http://www.taleofgenji.org/links.html, including a couple different online copies of Edward Seidensticker's translation, which is still perfectly good, even if no longer THE translation (*cuddles her Royall Tyler translation*). The site itself is pretty decent, if only for the mountains of photos.

Maou: Japanese suspense drama
Download

Mendol Ikemen Idol: Japanese drama about crossdressing pop idols
Download

Let Dai: Korean manhwa that seems to take place in a dystopic, "amorous" Seoul (it's yaoi!)

Like Water for Chocolate: Mexican Spanish-language novel/film with maigical realism (I think the nomination is for the film but I'm not sure), takes place during the Mexican Revolution

Long Love Letter: Japanese post-apocalyptic drama | pimp post | download

Also, for the list with the White Creators, there's Kij Johnson - The Fox Woman which is a retelling of a Japanese folktale in Heian-era Japan. Not sure about criticism of her work but you can add it to the list!

Re: Mendol Ikemen Idol. Jdramas only covers the first seven episodes; episodes 1-11 (of 12) are up at Tranquil Spring. The last episode is available through DramaCrazy, although I wouldn't recommend watching it there unless you're really into the series and/or have a thick skin (the fansubber calls viewers "faggots" a couple of times).
dharmavati: a floating jellyfish ({nodame} all you do is eat!)

[personal profile] dharmavati 2009-11-15 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, thanks! I didn't check for the number of episodes when I looked for the jdramas post so that's my laziness there. I did also find the twelve episodes at Silent Regrets (links to MegaUpload) just now but I'm not entirely sure if the final episode has subtitles (since there's no separate file for the subs as there are for the other episodes) but it might be an alternative. :P
ambyr: pebbles arranged in a spiral on sand (nature sculpture by Andy Goldsworthy) (Pebbles)

[personal profile] ambyr 2009-11-07 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Should Michelle West (aka Michelle Sagara -- she has fandoms nominated under both names) be on the list? She's Japanese-Canadian. However, I'm a little unsure how to fill in the form for her works, which are all secondary-world fantasy with multiple invented cultures and races. Maybe someone else could take a stab at it?
dhobikikutti: earthen diya (Default)

[personal profile] dhobikikutti 2009-11-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
At some point we will probably want to start a subset list with fantasy cultures that are recognisably PoC/Non-White etc...
trialia: Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), head down, hair wind-streamed, eyes almost closed. (young wizards] grenfelzing)

[personal profile] trialia 2010-10-16 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
You might also want to add N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms to the list for this year, as it's been nominated (yay for new fandoms!). It's set in a fantasy world, but the protagonist and most of the main characters are chromatic, as is the author herself. :)

(Really hoping this one gets fic!)

ETA: Oh, and Nora Jemisin is a Brooklyn resident, so adding her should help with that last point in your post. (I think she grew up there, but you could ask her to be sure? She's on Twitter.)
