Kaleidoscope 2012 Beta Resources

Hello, doers of darkness -- with assignments sent out, many of us are thinking about whom we can contact to beta our fanwork submission (in addition to general feels about our assignment).

If you can offer beta services for any of the nominated fandoms or cultures, ethnicities, languages, religions or other identities with which these sources deal, please leave a comment with the following information:
AO3 username: if any.
Contact information: e-mail address, Dreamwidth/LiveJournal/etc. account, IM account and/or other kind of communication tools.
Type of fanworks you can beta: artworks, graphics, mixes, podfics, stories and/or vids.
Relevant information: fandoms, cultures, ethnicities, languages, religions or other identities for which you can beta and any other information you think may be relevant, e.g. content you can't beta or for which would like to be warned.
If you have specific needs, feel free to comment anonymously with your beta request and, hopefully, a beta will reply to your comment with their contact information. We are also happy to act as a go-between if you email us your request to darkadmn AT gmail DOT com.

We also maintain Chromatic Beta, a general mailing list centering around chromatic sources where you can offer or request beta services for a particular fandom or culture, ethnicity, language, religion or other identity, which you can utilize and of which you can find more information at our announcement of the mailing list. In addition, [community profile] chromatic_podfic maintains their own pronunciation/language beta list, and our past beta resource posts are available for additional reference.

Assignments are sent! & Beta Resources

Hello doers of darkness -- thank you again for signing up for Kaleidoscope! All assignments have been sent. If you signed up for Kaleidoscope and have not received an email about your assignments, please leave a comment here, contact us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com, or PM us at [livejournal.com profile] darkadmn/[personal profile] dark_administrator.

If you've written a Dear Doer of Darkness letter, please leave a link here or just browse through the post for inspiration.

As assignments period begins, it's time to start thinking about betas. We have a Chromatic Beta mailing list that participants can utilize. However, we would like to also organize a Kaleidoscope-specific beta resources post so that there are more opportunities for participants to find a beta.

To that end, if you can offer beta services for any of the nominated fandoms or cultures, ethnicities, languages, religions or other identities with which these sources deal, please leave a comment with the following information:

account, IM account and/or other kind of communication tool.

Relevant information: fandoms, cultures, ethnicities, languages, religions or other identities for which you can beta and any other information.

Thank you for your help!

Beta Mailing List

Hello doers of darkness! We're excited to announce Chromatic Beta, a mailing list centering around chromatic sources where you can offer or request beta services for a particular fandom or culture, ethnicity, language, religion or other identity. Our goal is to promote responsible portrayal of chromatic characters among others in fanworks.

We use the term "chromatic" as an umbrella definition for "person of color", "non-white", "multiracial", "indigenous", "sourcelander", "hyphenate", "diasporian", etc.; while we acknowledge that it has shortcomings. Similarly, we accept that there is a certain flattening in our "white/Western/other" terminology.

The mailing list is open to anyone who is looking for a beta or interested in offering beta services. You can join the list here. To request a specific beta service... )

Beta Resources Post

If you can offer your beta skills for a particular fandom, or culture, ethnicity, language, religion or other identity, please comment here! We will be making a list of all the offers so that people have an easy way to find the help they need.

If you have specific needs, feel free also to post here requesting a beta; anonymous comments will be unscreened, and can be replied to by a beta letting you know how to contact them. To maintain challenge anonymity, we are also happy to act as go-between if you have exhausted all other resources; just email us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com.

DO REMEMBER: No beta is a magical minority fairy! They are not the One True Arbitrator for their People, and cannot be held responsible for other people finding fault with your story. Also, it is best to have done your own research and leg-work before asking your beta for help.

Also check out the Official beta post over on [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, which also has detailed instructions for how to go into yuletide chat and wrangle a hippo for beta help.

If you think you are going to write a last minute treat or extra story in a fandom, do try to plan for a beta in advance, because we cannot promise to be able to find you a last minute beta!

Beta-request post for Racebending Revenge Challenge

For Authors:
This post is where you can request for a beta with familiarity with a specific culture, race or ethnicity. Please remember that no beta, no matter how informed in their area of expertise, speaks for the entire range of people with that identity. They can help you spot some problems in your story, but their opinion of it does not equate to how everyone else should react to it. In addition, please do not dump the entire burden of accuracy on your beta; most people are far more willing to assist you when you can prove you have been proactive with your own research and self-education.

You can also look over the beta resource list generated for [archiveofourown.org profile] yuletide, although we cannot promise that the people who volunteered then might still be available or willing.

If you are unsure of what you need, it might help to summarise the context of your story and what you are looking for help with, along with a way that a beta can contact you (email, private message etc).

For Betas:
Please consider leaving a comment with a little information about your background, identity or area of study as you feel it might pertain to the someone's need of your input, along with the preferred way you would like an author to get in touch with you (email, private message, etc).

If anyone has beta requests or offers that they would prefer to keep quiet, you can contact the mods for go-between assistance by emailing us at darkadmn AT gmail DOT com.

Please line up your betas!

We're getting to the point where Yuletide panic is beginning to set in, so please make sure you have your betas lined up.

You can look for a culture and canon specific beta over on our beta resources post. That is also the place where comments are screened so you can ask for assistance in finding a beta.

You can also try to find a fandom specific beta over on the main yuletide beta post.

We did promise that part of our way to encourage participation in this challenge was helping you find a beta, but we can't do it last minute, so if you think there are fandoms you might be writing pinch hits or treats for, get your beta lined up in advance!

Remember, a beta can also be useful in bouncing ideas off of, especially when you are unsure about the appropriateness or cultural sensitivity of a certain writing choice.
