Kaleidoscope nominations closed!

Doers of darkness, nominations for Kaleidoscope 2012 are now closed! So far we have approved 155 fandoms and 758 characters (not including the 25 fandoms and 136 characters we are still processing). We will be generating a list of nominated fandoms, characters, and people for your review shortly.

While our mod team has done its best to look up fandom and character names in their original languages, there are several cases where we would like to verify those names as we do not read/write the languages in question and information was not available. We'd like to draw on the multilingual expertise of this community to ask for help. Our goal is to include name in the original source language and a romanized version of the name when possible and we would appreciate your help!

We also welcome clarifications and corrections on how the names and titles in the Kaleidoscope 2012 Nominations list are transcribed and transliterated from the original source language via comments, email (darkadmn [at] gmail [dot] com) or PM.

Once we've finished processing nominations, our disputes period will begin on August 27 (countdown clock), so stay tuned! We'll once again need your help with clarifications and corrections on fandom and character eligibility in order to finalize the nominations list.

Thank you again to everyone who promoted our challenge! Happy International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition!

For Madoka Magica:

"Afghan Girl", "Savanna magical girl", and "Tibetan magical girl" are all from the same sequence. They appear only briefly and have no canon names (also no voice actors, so there's no official reference to them in the credits). On Pixiv, the only one where multiple Japanese users have agreed on a tag is "チベットちゃん" ("Tibetan-chan"). There's a single picture tagged "サバンナからの女の子" ("Savannah girl" or "girl from savannah"), apparently no others which tag that character, and I couldn't find any at all with a tag naming the Afghan girl.

As the AO3 wrangler for the fandom, I would prefer their official tags to be standardized if possible. So here are the tags I would choose for those three (in the absence of a native speaker volunteering something more accurate...or the creators revealing their real names):

Afghan-chan | アフガニスタン人ちゃん
Savannah-chan | サバンナちゃん
Tibetan-chan | チベットちゃん

Meanwhile, "Cleopatra VII of Egypt" is easy, as she's the same character as the one on the existing tag. According to Wikipedia the ancient Greek would have been "Κλεοπάτρα Φιλοπάτωρ". "Queen Himiko" is also the same as the existing tag. Wikipedia gives her name as "卑弥呼".

I have reservations about making up Japanese names when there is no canonical, however, if you're going to do that, it should be アフガニスタンちゃん or perhaphs アフガンちゃん, not アフガニスタン人ちゃん. Also the corresponding romanisations would be Afghanistan-chan (or Afghan-chan) and Tibet-chan.

(I am not a native speaker, either, but I am fluent.)

[personal profile] erinptah 2012-08-24 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! That does sound better. (I was obviously using Google Translate on Pixiv, and know enough to tell when something sounds off, but not enough to second-guess it correctly ^_^;)

I do think Tibet-chan | チベットちゃん is a common enough fanon name to use in the absence of a canon one. (Similar to Poor-chan and...is it Bear-ko?) The others are just a case of "eh, we have to call them something, so...."

With the African girl, "Savannah-chan" may not be common, but that's the only "name" I've ever seen her given (as opposed to descriptions, like "indigenous African girl" or "girl from the savannah"). So at least it's not elevating one fanon name and ignoring a bunch of others. IDK how the fest mods feel about sticking with English here, but I'd definitely be happy just making the tag "Savannah-chan" without trying to back-translate it at all. (Back-translation could be added later if she ever caught on in the Japanese fandom.)

The Middle Eastern girl is the one I'm not at all sure about. Especially since I don't think what we see of her is distinctive enough to identify even the country she's from :/

Thank you for your help with the translation! We would general prefer, for nameless or uncredited characters, to include descriptions in the original source language rather than just the English descriptions.
erinptah: (Default)

[personal profile] erinptah 2012-08-24 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I get the value of including Japanese descriptions when possible! It's just that including a romanization here feels like overkill. Once you've got the kanji/kana version, the romanized version isn't useful for either source-language speakers or English speakers. Tags should be identifiers, not language lessons.
troisroyaumes: Painting of a duck, with the hanzi for "summer" in the top left (Default)

[personal profile] troisroyaumes 2012-08-24 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
For the purposes of our challenge, we don't intend tags to just serve as identifiers. We have a lot of participants who are living outside the country of their heritage culture or in postcolonial nations, and there are complicated language politics that are part of that experience. E.g. one can be Chinese-American but be more comfortable reading pinyin than hanzi. As a result, we chose this system deliberately to reflect the experiences of our community members.

While we appreciate your input as a tag wrangler (several of us are tag wranglers too), our purpose here is not to create a taxonomy but to use a nomenclature that is inclusive of all our participants.

Suikoden III & Madoka Magica

[personal profile] sirvalkyrie 2012-08-24 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
For Suikoden III, while they are playable characters, they are just three of 108 characters in the game that are recruitable. While fun characters, they are not part of the main story at all and can be skipped. I have not seen the Japanese writing for their names at any Suikoden site.

For the remaining Madoka Magica characters, here is the relevant section about them on the Puella Magi wiki: http://wiki.puella-magi.net/Madoka_Magica_Episode_12:_My_Best_Friend#Other_Magical_Girls

I nominated the one as "Afghan Girl" due to the fan theory that she is based on National Geographic's "Afghan Girl". In which case her name would be Sharbat Gula. The other two were just physical descriptions of them.

Re: Suikoden III & Madoka Magica

[personal profile] erinptah 2012-08-24 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
On PMMM: Is there anything in the Middle Eastern girl's appearance, do you know, that suggests she's specifically Afghani? Or was it a case of "she might be Sharbat Gula, that would make her Afghani" rather than "she looks Afghani, that means she could be Sharbat Gula"?

Thank you for the information (& for hunting down the information)!

Speaking personally, since AO3's tag sets accept the usage of non-canonical tags, our guidelines deviate from AO3's tag wrangling guidelines in a few areas. We prioritze the sourcelanders and in case of:

-for English loan words, we generally prefer to romanize them to the original source language, hence, Gyeongseong Seukaendeul instead of Gyeongseong Scandal
-for canonically English titles, we generally prefer to include the translation in the original source language (not just English title)
-for nameless characters, we generally prefer to include descriptions in the original source language (not just the English description)

We don't have a general guideline, however, on wrangling the canonical English Titles as Pet Shop of Horrors | ペットショップ オブ ホラーズ or Pettoshoppu obu Horāzu | ペットショップ オブ ホラーズ | Pet Shop of Horrors. Do you have thoughts on this?
torachan: (Default)

Re: This should be all the Japanese ones

[personal profile] torachan 2012-08-24 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Something like "Pettoshoppu obu Horāzu | ペットショップ オブ ホラーズ | Pet Shop of Horrors" seems redundant to me. Including the direct romanisation of a title that is in English in both languages is not prioritising sourcelanders (they don't need romanisation), nor does it benefit non-Japanese-speakers.

As for providing descriptions in the original language for unnamed characters, that's understandable. The reason I said it felt weird for the Madoka one is because the suggestion was not just to put a description but to create a fake Japanese-y fan name, which to me feels really...idk, presumptuous? Because to write it in Japanese like that is presenting it as if it's what Japanese fans use, when it's (to our knowledge) not.

The Paradise Kiss one is easy, though. If you want Japanese for "Yukari's mother" it should be 紫のお母さん.

Thank you for your thoughts! We ([community profile] dark_agenda), will discuss the matter re: canonically titles internally.

That's a valid concern. For the nominated name of "Savanna magical girl", we'll likely use Saban'na kara no on'nanoko | サバンナからの女の子 | Girl from Savannah or a variation.

Do you have suggested translations for girl from Tibet and girl wearing a ḥijāb? For the nominated name of Tibetan magical girl, we might go with girl from Tibet or Tibet-chan | チベットちゃん as [personal profile] erinptah and you noted above: http://dic.pixiv.net/a/チベットちゃん
erinptah: Madoka and Homura (madoka)

Re: This should be all the Japanese ones

[personal profile] erinptah 2012-08-24 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
For similar reasons re: canonically-English titles, I wouldn't put a romanization on non-name description like "サバンナからの女の子". Japanese readers already know how to pronounce it, and, unlike with names, English readers have no reason to.

The Pixiv Encyclopedia page about the characters in that sequence also uses Tibet-chan -- that's established fanon, definitely go with it. It describes the other two as "アフリカ先住民の少女" ("indigenous African girl") and "イスラム風衣装の少女" ("girl in Muslim-style clothing", I think). If you want to identify them by "some way they've been described in Japanese fandom", a wiki page that's been edited by lots of users seems a more likely source than a tag that one random user has put on one picture.

Oh, good find. I googled a lot last night and was just not finding any discussion of these girls in Japanese based on the keywords I was using.

The romaniji for those would be Afurika Senjuumin no Shoujo and Isuramufuu Ishou no Shoujo.

Also 紫のお母さん is Yukari no Okaasan.

Thank you again, [personal profile] torachan, for all your help and input! We wouldn't be able to find all those Kana/Kanji & Romaji names if it weren't for your help.

Regarding sources with names in a different language from their original source language, just to let you know that after thoughts and discussion we decided to have Stylized Title | Translated Title in Original Source Language | Romanisation of Translated Title (or Stylized Title when it's in a non-English language) as our tagging convention.

For Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika characters who were unnamed/uncredited in the sources, we decided to tag them as the following:
-Afurika Senjuumin no Shōjo | アフリカ先住民の少女 | Girl from Savanna
-Isuramufuu Ishou no Shōjo | イスラム風衣装の少女 | Girl wearing Muslim-style clothing
-Tibet-chan | チベットちゃん

I left a comment in reply to [personal profile] erinptah that may explain better our reasoning behind including romanization. In short, we don't just have sourcelanders and cultural outsiders in our community to consider. However, we are in the process of discussing the question of what to do for the case of fandoms that were released in English in the country of origin, as that's a somewhat different situation than our choice to romanize English loan words and unnamed character descriptions.

On romanization: That was my thought on Assault Girls as well--less so for the title, but during about 80% of the movie the characters are speaking English, and the character names are names picked by the characters for their English-language-mandated virtual reality role-playing game. (They yell at the GM to conduct negotiations in Japanese at one point, but the common language of the game is English.) So the character names are actually in English in the source. (I'd have to go to screencaps to check, but I think they're displayed in English as well.)

In any case, thank you also for the correction, the character tag has been corrected to Tominaga Sei "Kamiya Seizaburō" | 富永セイ "神谷清三郎".

(Anonymous) 2012-08-25 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Aha, ปาย is looking extremely likely! Not only is it a possible match for the screencap, googling "จีจ้า ดื้อ สวย ดุ" สนิม +ปาย turns up this page:
http://cyberbird.exteen.com/20090813/entry
With this paragraph:

Google Translate says that the paragraph is talking about the movie's romance storyline and love triangle, and something it translates as "steel and banners", that is "สนิม และ ปาย" or "Sanim [means 'iron rust'] and Pai".

Looks like ปาย is almost certainly it!

Grr Argh!! The AO3 bug prevented me from accessing the site the whole day, and I missed noms. :(
Also, is it just me, or is it kind of weird wishing a HappyInternational Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition?
Anyway...
Regarding names, I'm a little unsure how you're deciding which Indian language to pick along with the Romanised ones. Because I notice that you've got one name in Urdu and one in Punjabi for Dil Bole Hadippa, but the film itself is in Hindi. And in Chak De! India, I have no idea of the language scripts of all the various mother tongues the characters would use, and so those are going to be transliterations to Hindi too. And in Kahaani some of those characters are Bengali, but again, Hindi movie. Anyway, here is everything in Hindi -

Thank you for the transliteration, Kutti!

Grr Argh!! The AO3 bug prevented me from accessing the site the whole day, and I missed noms. :(

Have you tried some of the suggested workaround at http://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/245?

In any case, if you send us your nominations, we can manually added them in our tags set.

Yeah, I tried it but it didn't work. And thanks for the offer, but it's cool. I will work with what's been nominated :)

Was it not possible to nominate additional characters for an approved fandom? I nominated several more people for Mongolian History RPF. :-(

I personally also had problems adding additional characters for an approved fandom, and it took me several tries before it went through. If you click on the button "Your Nominations" at the top of our tag set, it will show whether or not your character nominations were inputted into the tag set. If you don't see them there, please PM us at [personal profile] dark_administrator or email us at darkadmn at gmail, and we'll manually add the missing characters to the fandom.

PM'd, hope that's helpful. The tag nomination business seems very complicated!

Also this is not exactly related, but I noticed that the nominated name for the character Isabella in Paradise Kiss is Yamamoto Daisuke "Isabella" and I wanted to ask if it could be changed.

The character is referred to as Isabella by everyone throughout canon. The only time we learn of her birth name IIRC is in a flashback from when she was a little kid.

I know it's "just" a fictional character, but to me continually referring to her by her birth name despite the fact that that is not the name she goes by is just really disrespectful and hurtful, especially when the formatting reinforces the idea that her birth name is her "real" name and her chosen name is just some nickname.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry I didn't catch that myself. You're completely right, of course, and I will make a note of it on the spreadsheet. (It may take a little longer to delete and re-add the tag to the tag set itself, but I promise it'll be fixed as soon as possible.)

Isabella's name has been corrected to "Yamamoto Isabella | 山本イザベラ". I'm sorry for the mistake!

Thanks again. I also just realised that in my nominations for Hourou Musuko, I just put a character's name as Yuki, because that is the name she goes by and I had a similar do-not-want reaction to the thought of including her birth name. However, there's really no need to leave off her family name as I did, so if you could change it to be just family name + chosen name like with Isabella's, that would be great. It should be Yoshida Yuki | 吉田ユキ.

(With the rest of the Hourou Musuko characters unfortunately there's no choice but to use their birth names, despite their stated dislike for them, since that is how they are generally referred to in the series.)

I don't seem to see Yuki listed as being nominated for Hourou Musuko in our AO3 tags set (either in the review nominations or in the main tags set) or in our spreadsheet. Could you check your nominations form to see if the character was inputted?

Hmm, I don't show it, either. I thought I had picked her, but I must have changed my mind at the last minute. ^_^;; Forget I said anything, then! *headdesk*

Wasn't sure where to ask

So, I'm posting downstream as it were. I didn't nominate "Popol Vuh" this year, because I did last year. Since I don't see it in the list of works, is it a fresh list every year based on nominations? Which would make sense to not have to research the backlog as well. Just checking so I know to nominate it next year.

Thanks

Hi! Yes, this year's nominations list is based on the nominations we received this year and does not include last year's.
